The New iPad Mini 7: The Short King of iPads 🤴

Performance Boost

At the heart of the iPad mini 7 is the A17 Pro chip.

This is supposed to be a big upgrade from the previous A15 chip.

This new processor offers:

• 30% faster CPU performance

• 25% improved graphics capabilities

• Support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing

• Enhanced AI and machine learning capabilities

These improvements translate to smoother performance in everyday tasks.

I’m especially excited for accelerated AI support.

Apple Intelligence

The A17 Pro chip enables the iPad mini 7 to make use of Apple Intelligence.

I’ve written a bit about Apple Intelligence already. I’m pretty excited.

Storage and Connectivity

Apple has doubled the base storage to 128GB, addressing a common complaint about the previous model's 64GB starting capacity.

The USB-C port has been upgraded to support 10Gbps data transfer speeds, twice as fast as before.

Wireless connectivity has also been improved with Wi-Fi 6E support and Bluetooth 5.3 (but who really cares).

Apple Pencil Pro Compatibility

The iPad mini 7 now supports the Apple Pencil Pro, offering advanced features like squeeze gestures, barrel roll, and haptic feedback.

This is nice for students, artists, and anyone else using the pencil. Thumbs up from me.

Sucks for people with Apple Pencil 2 though.

Display Enhancements

While retaining the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, the iPad mini 7 introduces some cool improvements:

• The same 60Hz refresh rate (they supposedly got rid of jelly scrolling)

• True Tone display with P3 wide color gamut for more accurate color reproduction

• Peak brightness is at 500 nits brightness

Camera System Upgrade

The iPad mini 7 has a better camera system:

• 12MP ultra-wide front camera with Center Stage support for video calls

• 12MP wide rear camera with Smart HDR 4 and improved low-light performance

• 4K video recording at 60 fps with extended dynamic range

Don’t know who’s taking 4k video with an iPad mini, but hey, it’s an option.

Battery Life and Charging

Here are the stats:

• Up to 10 hours of web browsing or video playback on a single charge

• Built-in 19.3-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery

Environmental Impact

For sustainability people:

• The iPad mini 7 uses 100% recycled aluminum in its enclosure

• Packaging is 100% recyclable and made from responsibly sourced materials

• The device is free of harmful substances like mercury, BFRs, and PVC

Conclusion

In short: nothing crazy, but nice.
