stoic: The Best Way To Not Break Your New Year's Resolution (Again)
the new journaling app on the block
Time to make hopeless promises to test our self-discipline.
Apple didn't give us Journal on iPadOS. stoic is even better than what could have been.
The Idea
At first glance, stoic seems like every journaling app out there. And then, you feel the magic.
Other journaling apps are built as journaling apps. stoic is built like a university student's (successful) attempt to make a sexy personal project.
The app:
reduces the friction to journal with a snappy UI
makes it fun to journal with an enjoyable UI
These two characteristics make it 10x easier for you to stick with your habits.
Features
Here's a quick summary of the big features.
Mood Check-Ins
Use faces to judge how "good" you feel (1-5). Useful for short-term and long-term tracking.
Journaling
A minimalist system to build journal entries.
Feel free to use:
Text
Voice recordings
New photos
Old photos
Drawings
Inspiration
Cool quotes + your thoughts on them.
Exercises
A collection of writing, breathing, and meditation exercises based on "genre" (think morning, productivity, etc).
Trends
Analyze your stoic history. Can also connect to HealthKit for more detailed insights.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Navigation shortcuts. Nothing crazy, but nice to see.
Appearance
Modify basic app and editor settings.
App Details
stoic is very popular: it has 4.8 out of 5 stars from 28,000+ ratings. It has also won an App Store Editors' Choice award.
stoic supports English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish, and Swedish.
Pricing
For free users, the app is fantastic. No ads and you get access to all relevant features.
At the same time, premium could be worth it. You get:
iCloud sync
extra journaling/meditation exercises
locked notes
other helpful features.
There's also a Premium + AI plan with some cool AI features (think Apple Intelligence but for stoic):
personalized prompts
smart notifications
reflective analysis (analyzes your journal entries)
Here's the pricing:
Premium (Yearly): $39.99/year
Premium (Monthly): $6.99/month
Premium + AI (Yearly): $99.99/year
Premium + AI (Monthly): $12.99/month
600,000 AI tokens (~600 AI uses): $24.99
If I end up really liking stoic, I might get the Premium yearly plan ($3.33/mo is a steal). Premium + AI doesn't seem worth it to me.
Final Thoughts
stoic is fantastic. Will keep testing it out though.
Thanks for reading!
