The iPad is boring.
When I heard about Apple's upcoming event, I was insanely excited. I started going through rumor websites, leak videos, and even random forums.
And then I learned that the event is meant to be about Macs.
As a guy who writes about iPads, that made me pretty sad. It also led me down a rabbit hole:
Here's what I learned about Apple's upcoming iPads in late 2023 and beyond.
iPad
There hasn't been much surrounding the base-level iPad lately.
It released around a year ago though, meaning there's a good chance we could see something pretty soon (Apple usually updates their base-level iPads on an annual-ish basis).
My guess is that we'll see a spec bump (aka a slightly faster processor).
The release of the new USB-C Apple Pencil might make things a bit interesting though. Hopefully Apple can figure out a way to add some hardware features to a new, 11th-generation iPad.
iPad Mini
Sadly, the iPad Mini probably won't be getting any major updates either.
Other than a minor processor update and small changes, I really don't see anything big happening.
According to MacRumors, here's what we could expect from the 7th-gen iPad Mini:
A bump to the A16 Bionic Chip
New front and rear cameras
New colors
Reduced "jelly scrolling"
Not super exciting.
iPad Air
There are widespread rumors that there might be a bigger iPad Air coming soon.
Here's why:
Apple usually gives each product a codename
For the new iPad Air, these appear to be J507 and J508
That's unusual though—the only other model to have two codenames is the iPad Pro (which has 11-inch and 12.9-inch versions)
No one really knows how big the new iPad Air could be. Most guesses place it at 12.9 inches, which makes sense (that's the size of the bigger iPad Pro models).
In terms of other updates, the next iPad Air will probably see a bump up to the M2 chip.
These new iPad Air models are probably some of the most exciting devices that'll be released in the coming months.
And there's a good chance the new iPad Air could be coming soon—the latest generation released over a year and a half ago.
iPad Pro
A new iPad Pro isn't likely to come out until early spring or summer of 2024.
That being said, there could be some HUGE upgrades.
This is what Mark Gurman says we could see:
M3 chip (aka ⚡️)
OLED display (aka 💡)
A revamped Magic Keyboard (aka 👇)
There are also rumors about a 14- or 15-inch model coming out soon.
These are all super exciting. But with these upgrades comes a big price bump.
We're talking $1300-$1800.
Is that something I'm really looking forward to? I'm not 100% sure.
Concepts
This week I had my first ever college midterm.
I was exhausted. And I had no idea what to write about.
That's where Concepts came in.
Concepts is an incredible "unlimited canvas" note-taking app I've used for years. When I was stuck coming up with a topic for this week's post, I used Concepts to help me brainstorm a bunch of different ideas to write about.
I absolutely love Concepts. As a student, writer, and freelancer, Concepts is a critical part of my digital toolkit.
